Blackberry Is Back
Smartphones are getting smarter and smarter every year, but prices are higher than ever. Prices of smartphones are reaching laptop levels. So are these smartphones even worth it? I will examine to smartphones at different price ranges, lay out all the facts, and give insight on who should buy which phone.
This week, the iPhone X is met by a long lost competitor, Blackberry, with the new Blackberry Motion. Back before iPhone was created, Blackberry controlled nearly half of the smartphone market (Forbes). However, Blackberry was soon demolished by the iPhone sending them from a $1.9 billion profit margin to a staggering $5.8 billion deficit. Could this be the next break for Blackberry, only time will tell.
Now back to the phones at hand, the iPhone X starts at $999, while the Blackberry Motion starts at $460. Right off the bat, the Blackberry Motion sweeps the floor in terms of a smartphone for college students with barely any money to spare.

The first thing you notice is the beautiful full screen display that covers nearly the whole screen. The display is an OLED or Organic LED display which allows for a wider range of possible colors. The next thing you probably notice is that there is no home button. Apple has thrown out TouchID for what they call FaceID. To unlock your phone all you need to do is look at it and it will unlock. They claim it will be more secure than Touch ID saying that "the chance that a random person could use their fingerprint to unlock your iPhone is about 1 in 50,000," but "The chance that a random person in the population could look at your iPhone X and unlock it with their face is about one in a million" (Forbes). However, this is of course negated if you have an identical twin, because they would be able to access your phone. So, if you are a twin, the iPhone X may not be a good choice (Apple).

The Blackberry motion does not have OLED it is still rocking the 'old' LED panel, but it is a lot cheaper, so cut it some slack. They have their own version of TouchID and unlike many other top phones, the fingerprint sensor is on the front. This makes the back look clean as well as easy since you will always be able to reach the sensor with your finger (gsmarena).
The other amenities that propel the iPhone X to the glorious phone that it is, are not used by most consumers on a daily basis. That being said, if you want a phone with a better camera and have the money, go with the iPhone X. The camera is significantly better on the iPhone X and the pictures will look even better on the super retina HD display.
The one final feature that really separates these two phones is the presence or lack of the headphone jack. The iPhone X does not have a headphone jack, which means you are stuck using dongles or stuck buying a pair of wireless headphones. For some a headphone jack is a must, but that is for you to decide.
Overall, the iPhone X is clearly the better phone. It cannot be said otherwise. However, in terms of college students who cannot afford the best of the best fancy iPhone X that is worth $1000 then, the Blackberry Motion is a perfectly acceptable device. It comes with all the standards in terms of smartphones these days at a reasonable price. There is not much lacking in this device, which is why it is a great option, it just is not pushing the boundaries of what a phone can do.
You have done an extensive amount research on this topics. I too am a complete geek for smartphones and I must say that I heavily appreciate this blog. I must say, it was interesting to see the brand new beast in the street, the iPhone X, pitted up against a the has-been ex champion of the phone industry who decided to attempt a comeback. Though vastly different, it was interesting to see the selected comparative specs.
